As many of you may already know I teach lessons at Craftmania in Great Yarmouth & lowestoft and I always try to come up with fresh uses for products that can be found in store... So a little while back I was coming up with new ideas... And it lead to this...
Now this is no ordinary Christmas box... Anyone can make a box!... This is a surprise box, the surprise is the top and the bottom are not attached to the actual frame of the box, and one of the sides is velcroed instead of glued... Meaning that we can open it to create a mantel piece Christmas decoration!
So let's chat about how to make your box...
So for mine I used pre-made chipboard frames -
Firstly take the top of the frame and pick the 12x12 paper you wish to cover them in - I used kaisercraft silent night - down the chimney sheet
If you twist the frames in a clockwise direction around the sheet you'll fit all four fronts on one sheet
Once you've cut them out, stick them on.
Next up we will take the 4 back panels and join them... To join them we use 4 pieces of card 4.5cm wide, score them down both sides at 2cm (leaving a 0.5cm train track down the middle) this will give your frame movement...
Just a little look inside so you can see the joins, don't forget on both ends you need to attach Velcro so the panel can open.
So moving on to the pictures that appear in frames, I stuck mine in and sealed the frames... But you could have left the top of the frames open so you could add family pics instead... I used cut out panels from the graphic 45 st Nicholas collection... Be jolly.
Time to add a little more decoration to the rest of the box...
For this I used graphic 45 - st Nicholas - seasons greetings sheet
Cutting border strips and foam padding them to the outside of the box, along with text panels and Christmas stamps.
I've added the kaisercraft poinsettia die - cut out of kraft card - inked with aged mahogany
To give a little more depth I've also added the IO fern die - cut from Kraft card - inked with pine needles
On to the base & box top... These are both made from 21cm squares, scored at 1cm around all 4 sides - because we are wrapping the box in ribbon the sides don't need to offer too much support.
I've then added a ribbon around the sides of the base and lid and a couple of card layers to the lid, along with a couple more border strips from the same sheet.
I've wrapped this box with a double satin gold ribbon and added on a cut out tag from the same sheet.
With these sheets you get so many elements I've even made a very quick card to go with it -
Just to use up the left over bits and bobs :)
All of the bits in todays project are available from Craftmania Great Yarmouth - Norfolk & Lowestoft - Suffolk - www.facebook.com/CraftmaniaCrafts
